The proposal to change the name of Aurangabad district to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar has sparked a wave of objections in Maharashtra, with more than 1 lakh objections filed against the change. The State Government had allowed for objections and suggestions to be submitted until March 27th, and the number of objections has continued to rise.
On a single day, around 47,295 objections were filed, taking the total to 1,15,000. However, in support of the rename, only 1,250 applications have been submitted. There has been a rush at offices to submit forms, with people filling out objections and asking the government not to change the name of the historical city of Aurangabad.
Meanwhile, the Hindu Jan Jagran Samiti claims to have gathered 4 to 5 lakh applications in support of the rename and will submit them soon. In a show of support, the Hindu Samaj has started a stickers campaign, putting stickers of Sambhaji Nagar and a photo of Shivaji Maharaj personal bikes in support of the name change.
The debate over the name change continues, with objections and support pouring in from all sides. The State Government will take action after the deadline for objections and suggestions has passed on March 27th.
