2 kg of antique British era coins found in MGM campus

The work is going on to erect a memorial of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray at Priyadarshani Udyan in the MGM area. While digging the protective walls for the monument, two kilograms of British-era coins were found around 6 pm on Monday. The coins were immediately handed over to the police by the municipal officer and the contractor. The coins will soon be handed over to the State Archaeological Department for further investigation.

the contractor was digging to buy an old protective wall behind the monument with the help of JCB. As soon as the sound came, JCB stopped and when found in a bundle. Some coins were also found in a pit. 

As soon as the coins were found, contractor Rohit Swamy called ward engineer VK Gore and informed him about the incident. The ward engineer arrived soon. He looked at the coins and weighed them on an electronic machine. The weight of the coins was 1.958 kg.

 According to the preliminary information the coins are from the British period. The coins depict Queen Victoria's photo and date back to 1854, 1861, and 1881. Ward engineer Gore and the contractor immediately informed the Cidco police and the state archeology department was also informed, Gore said.

 The work of the protective wall was halted by the AMC due to the discovery of British-era coins. A letter will be sent to the police asking them to provide security and security guards will be appointed. Also, guidance will be sought from the state archeology department, Gore said.
